ABHYASA
ABHYASA, means the practice of achieving a serene state of mind throughdedicated effort.
This concept, coupled with vairagya—the art of detachingfrom that which no longer serves us—is central to attaining a peacefulmental state.ABHYASA is a collection of paintings, presented within a sculpturalinstallation, that captures the fleeting moments of light as the sun sets.
During her residency at Cap Karoo, Ophelia Jacarini meticulouslydocumented the changing intensity of the light, translating theseobservations into data analytics. Each day, she transformed this data into anew painting, creating a series that reflects the daily evolution of the sunset. These oil paintings on canvas are stretched over sumbasese pandan boxes, each housing a handwritten letter that serves as a form of journaling text, including notes about the colors and the clouds, as well as the unfolding ofthe sunset.
This body of work carries a biographical element for Jacarini, marking a pivotal time in her life when she delved into the study of Ayurvedaand meditation. As she embraced this lifestyle, she wove its principles intoher artistic practice, finding a metaphor for letting go in the daily sunset.
The transition from a predominantly blue palette to a spectrum of colorsimbues this collection with a dynamic impact, reflecting the ever-changingnature of the sunset.
The light of the sunset, influenced by the movement ofclouds and the weather, is inherently transient, leaving an indelibleimpression despite its fleeting nature. Each day, this natural, ephemeralphenomenon unfolds anew, yet remains distinct.
